Diet

Aquatic Plants & Algae
The foundation of many duck diets, encompassing a variety of seeds, roots, and leaves from submerged vegetation like pondweed, wild celery, and various algae species. Dabbling ducks, in particular, excel at filtering these from the water's surface or by tipping their bodies.

Insects & Invertebrates
A crucial protein source, especially for breeding ducks and growing ducklings. This includes a vast array of terrestrial and aquatic insects like dragonflies, beetles, and larvae, as well as worms, slugs, snails, and small crustaceans.

Grains, Seeds & Acorns
Ducks are opportunistic foragers on land, consuming fallen grains from agricultural fields such as corn, wheat, and barley. They also readily eat acorns, berries, and other wild seeds, particularly when aquatic food sources are less abundant.

Small Fish & Amphibians
Many diving duck species, such as mergansers, are adept hunters of small fish, fish eggs, and tadpoles. This high-energy diet is vital for species that spend much of their time in deeper waters.
